Use of Indefinite Articles
1).
‘a ‘and ‘an’ we use before a noun when it is newly introduced.
Eg. A) I saw a man. ( man is Noun)
b) I saw a woman.
c) Give me a book.
d) Here is an umbrella.

‘a’& ‘an’ is used instead of ‘one’.
a) I want a pen.
b) She has a new tape recorder.
c) I will buy a bike.
d) Mayuri has bought an orange which is an unique fruit.
3). before noun when it is an example of a class. (Here the meaning of ‘a’& ‘an’ is ‘every’.)

Use
of Definite article (The)
1. ‘The’ is used with noun already mentioned and
referred to again.
Eg : a) I met a girl. The girl was a
doctor.
b) A tiger is a dangerous animal. The
tiger is a dangerous animal.
2. When we speak of things which are the only one of
their kind.
Eg. a. The sun
b. The Moon
c. The Tajmahal
3. with regular countable objects noun which stand for
a class.
Eg a. The cycle is the common man’s vehicle.
b. The cow gives us milk.
c. The rose is a beautiful flower.
4. before an adjective to turn it into a noun.
Eg a. The old men

5. before the names of mountain, ranges, rivers, seas,
deserts etc.

6. before a superlative adjective in superlative
degree.

When indicating an
unspecified, limited amount of a count or noncount noun,
use some.
1. My cousin was seeking some advice from a counselor
(not advice in general or advice about
everything, but a limited amount of advice).
2. I would love some coffee right now
(not coffee in general, but a limited amount of coffee).
3. We might get rain tomorrow. Some rain would be good for the crops
(a certain amount of rain,
as opposed to rain in general).
4. There are some drops of water on the table
(a limited number, but more than one drop).

Noncount
nouns are those which
usually cannot be counted. Following are some common examples:
◊ Certain food
and drink items: bacon, beef, bread, broccoli, butter, cabbage, candy,
cauliflower, celery, cereal, cheese, chicken, chocolate, coffee, corn, cream,
fish, flour, fruit, ice cream, lettuce, meat, milk, oil, pasta, rice, salt,
spinach, sugar, tea, water, wine, yogurt
◊ Certain
nonfood substances: air, cement, coal, dirt, gasoline, gold, paper,
petroleum, plastic, rain, silver, snow, soap, steel, wood, wool
◊ Most
abstract nouns: advice, anger, beauty, confidence, courage,
employment, fun, happiness, health, honesty, information, intelligence,
knowledge, love, poverty, satisfaction, truth, wealth
◊ Areas of
study: history, math, biology, etc.
◊ Sports:
soccer, football, baseball, hockey, etc.
◊ Languages: Chinese,
Spanish, Russian, English, etc.
◊ Other:
clothing, equipment, furniture, homework, jewelry, luggage, lumber, machinery,
mail, money, news, poetry, pollution, research, scenery, traffic,

Geographical names are
confusing because some require the and some do not.
◊ Use the with:
united countries, large regions, deserts, peninsulas, oceans, seas, gulfs,
canals, rivers, mountain ranges, groups of islands

◊ Do not use the with:
streets, parks, cities, states, counties, most countries, continents, bays,
single lakes, single mountains, islands
